Public Meeting May 27 in Anderson County
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has scheduled a public information meeting May 27, 2004 concerning the proposed improvements to the intersection of SC Route  8/81 and Road S-17 (Highway 17) in Anderson County.
 
The drop-in meeting will be between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Spearman Primary School in the school gymnasium, 2001 Easley Highway, Piedmont.
 
The purpose of the meeting is to provide information concerning the proposed improvements to the intersection of SC Route  8/81 and Road S-17, and to solicit comments from area residents.  Personnel from SCDOT will be available to discuss the project with interested citizens on an individual basis.​

SCDOT News Conference Tuesday, May 25, in Columbia
Two dramatic re-enactments of fatal crashes in South Carolina will be unveiled during a news conference concerning work zone safety Tuesday, May 25, at the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in Columbia.
The news conference will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Room 306, SCDOT Headquarters, 955 Park St., in Columbia.
 
Families of the two victims plan to attend the news conference. Scheduled speakers from SCDOT include Director of Construction Danny Shealy and Director of Safety Terecia Wilson.
 
The two victims whose fatal crashes are portrayed in the public service announcements are:
 
Captain Brad Sanders, a Marine fighter pilot who was just back from an overseas deployment and driving to the Savannah airport to pick up his fiancé when his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck in a work zone in Beaufort.
Ted Yandle, a SCDOT employee working along I-26 when struck by a pickup truck.
Each year across the nation, approximately 900 people are killed in roadway work zone collisions. More than 40,000 people are injured in work zone crashes each year.
Memorial Day Weekend begins the "100 Deadliest Days" on our highways.
 
The Executive Director of SCDOT is Elizabeth S. Mabry.  The SCDOT Commission includes Chairman Tee Hooper of Greenville; Bob Harrell, Sr., 1st Congressional District; John N. Hardee, 2nd Congressional District; Marion P. Carnell, 3rd Congressional District; William C. "Bud" Turner, 4th Congressional District; Bobby T. Jones, 5th Congressional District; and John M. "Moot" Truluck, 6th Congressional District.

SCDOT Invites Public to Open Houses
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has scheduled open houses at maintenance offices across the state on Saturday, May 22, in accordance with National Transportation Celebration Week.
 
The open houses are an opportunity for the public to meet their local SCDOT employees and learn what it takes to maintain one of the nation's largest state-maintained highway systems. Events include demonstrations, historical photos, displays of equipment and poster competition awards. Children are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
 
The open houses will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 22.

For more information in advance of the open house, the public can contact their local maintenance office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
 
National Transportation Week provides an opportunity for the transportation community to join together for greater awareness about the importance of transportation. National Transportation Week also focuses on making youth aware of transportation-related careers. National Transportation Week is May 16-22.​

Children of SCDOT Employees to be Featured In Safety Campaign Unveiled at May 19 News Conference
Children of highway workers will be the focus of a new safety campaign unveiled during a news conference Wednesday, May 19, at the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in Columbia.
 
The news conference will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the front steps of SCDOT Headquarters, 955 Park St., in Columbia.
 
During the news conference, SCDOT will unveil signs depicting children of employees urging motorists to be safe as they travel through work zones. The campaign is designed to help motorists realize that highway workers are real people with families who love and need them, doing an important job in dangerous conditions every day.
 
NOTE: Children of employees will be present and available for interviews and to be photographed. Speakers include Director of Construction Danny Shealy, Director of Safety Terecia Wilson and Gene Ellison of the Carolinas Associated General Contractors.
 
In addition, SCDOT will have photo opportunities at several offices across the state in which children from each local area will be present to be photographed and to discuss the program. (SEE ATTACHMENT FOR LOCATIONS AND TIMES).
