Applications Sought for Federal Assistance of Public Transportation Programs

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is requesting applications for federal financial assistance to support local public transportation for two programs administered through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s, Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

Eligible applicants include private non-profit organizations, state or local governments and operators of public transportation services including private operators of public transportation services.

The application deadline is Sept. 19, 2011.  The funding programs are:

FTA Section 5316—Job Access Reverse Commute Program (JARC):  Funds are available in the rural and small urbanized areas of South Carolina. The goal of JARC is to improve access of transportation services welfare recipients and eligible low-income individuals seeking to obtain and maintain employment. FTA provides financial assistance for transportation services planned, designed, and carried out to meet the transportation needs of those eligible.

FTA Section 5317—New Freedom Program:  Funds are available in the rural and small urbanized areas of South Carolina. The New Freedom formula grant program aims to provide additional tools to overcome existing barriers facing Americans with disabilities seeking integration into the work force and full participation in society.  Lack of adequate transportation to work is a primary barrier for individuals with disabilities.  The New Freedom Program seeks to reduce barriers to transportation services and expand mobility options to the disabled beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

The application packet and instructions for each of these programs may be accessed at SCDOT’s website at:  http://www.scdot.org/getting/Masstransit.shtml. More information is also available by calling the SCDOT Office of Public Transit at (803) 737-0831.
