Repairs on I-85 Business Southbound To Require Temporary Closure

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to perform repair work on the Southbound SC 85 (Business I-85) bridges over Norfolk Southern Railroad and S-42-2 (Howard Street).  These bridges are located just south of the Hearon Circle Interchange in Spartanburg County.  This work will involve full depth concrete patching and repairs of the bridge decks.  It is anticipated that the work will be a continuous operation once it begins and will last for approximately 5 days.

Due to the nature of this work, it will be necessary to temporarily close a section of Southbound SC 85 (Business I-85), S-42-2 (Howard St), and S-42-995 (Buffington Rd) during this repair.  Northbound will remain open and all but one ramp on the Hearon Circle interchange will remain open.   It is anticipated that these closures will be in place during the week of March 29 – April 2, 2010, dependent on weather.   In an effort to minimize the impacts of the project to the motoring public, the closure date was selected in order to coincide with the Spring Break for Spartanburg Community College and the local school districts.

The detour for SC 85 will use I-585 Northbound, I-85 Southbound, and I-26 Eastbound.  This detour length will be approximately 3.6 longer miles than the closed road.  The detour for S-42-2 (Howard St) will use Simuel Rd, Hearon Circle, and SC 56.  This detour length will be approximately 0.3 miles longer than the closed road.  The detour of S-42-995 (Buffington Road) will use S-42-23 (Simuel Road) and S-42-65 (New Cut Rd). This detour length will be approximately 1.2 miles longer than the closed road.
