SCDOT Closes Lexington County Bridge to Heavy Trucks

Truck Exceeding Height Restrictions Damages I-26 Bridge

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is setting up a detour for trucks heavier than three tons on the Leaphart Road Bridge that crosses I-26 in Lexington County. The bridge was struck Friday afternoon by a truck that exceeded the 14-foot, 4-inch height limit, damaging a beam.

After examining the bridge, SCDOT bridge inspectors say the structure is safe for traffic except for trucks that exceed three tons, which could cause further damage. SCDOT Maintenance employees installed signs to designate the detour for tractor trailers.

The Highway Patrol is handling the investigation related to the incident.

DETOUR: Large trucks should take Chris Drive to US 378, and then use Harbor Drive to return to Leaphart Road. Chris Drive and Harbor Drive are the frontage roads along I-26
