Portion of US 601 to Temporarily Close Saturday, June 16 Due to Railroad Work by Norfolk Southern

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announces the temporary closure of a portion of US 601 in Richland and Calhoun counties on Saturday, June 16.

The closure is necessary for Norfolk Southern Railroad to work on a railroad crossing on US 601 a quarter-mile south of SC 48 (Bluff Road) in Richland County.

This portion of US 601 will be closed beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. It will reopen when Norfolk Southern completes the work by mid-afternoon Saturday, according to information provided to SCDOT from Norfolk Southern.

The detour around the closure for northbound motorists will be US 176 from the St. Matthews area in Calhoun County to I-26 west to I-77 north to SC 48 (Bluff Road). Southbound motorists will use Bluff Road to I-77 south to I-26 east.

The net detour length is 34 miles.

SCDOT currently has changeable message signs in place to inform motorists of the upcoming detour. On Saturday, SCDOT will staff locations where barricades are in place and signs will direct motorists.
