S.C. Department of Transportation Recognizes Outstanding Volunteer Efforts at Annual Adopt-A-Highway Awards Ceremony

The people who take part in one of the state’s longest running citizen-volunteer litter pickup programs will take center stage this week during the S. C. Department of Transportation’s (SCDOT) Adopt-A-Highway Awards Ceremony in Columbia. This year marks the program’s 19th year.

Representatives of volunteer groups from each of the state’s 46 counties will attend the awards ceremony at Seawell’s Restaurant on Rosewood Drive beginning at noon on Thursday, April 12.

The ceremony is held each year to recognize the outstanding service the citizen volunteers, coordinators and SCDOT employees, who participate in the program, render to the state of South Carolina. Milliken, Nucor Steel and Palmetto Pride helped to sponsor the event.

Last year, more than 2,000 groups with nearly 30,000 volunteers picked up trash and litter from along 5,000 miles of state maintained roads.
