Public Comment Sought to Increase Funding in STIP to Reconstruct Pavement of Existing Lanes along 8 Miles of I-85 Spartanburg County

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is providing public notification for a proposed amendment to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP) to increase funding to reconstruct eight miles of I-85 Northbound and Southbound from near Mile Marker 69 to near Mile Marker 77 in Spartanburg County for Federal Fiscal Year 2016.

This section of I-85 consists of two 12-feet shoulders and three 12-feet lanes in each direction.

The original scope for the project involved reconstructing the pavement for the right and center lanes.  However, additional engineering analysis revealed that the pavement and drainage layer are in worse condition than initially estimated.  In this regard, SCDOT determined that the safest and most cost efficient option would be to reconstruct all the shoulders and lanes along this section, which results in a cost increase for the project. The updated cost and schedule for the project reflects $400,000 of Preliminary Engineering and $75 million of Construction in FY 2016.

A copy of this press release and a location map are available for public review and comment until April 15, 2016   on the world-wide-web at:

A summary of public comments will be provided to the SCDOT Commission for consideration prior to approving the project in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
