The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announces the SC-120 (Alice Drive) Widening Project in Sumter County is entering the final stages of construction.
Construction is anticipated to continue along Alice Drive throughout the summer and be completed in October 2015.
"We would like to thank the Sumter community for its patience as our contractor enters the final stages of this project, which will both increase mobility and safety for motorists as well as access for pedestrians," said SCDOT Resident Construction Engineer Jeffrey Wilkes. "This has been a complex project with major drainage improvements and utility work necessary for an outcome we can all be proud of."
Work will concentrate near the intersection with Wise Drive during the month of June beginning with the Wise Drive closures detailed below.
Following the Wise Drive detours, work will continue near the Alice Drive/Wise Drive intersection and the majority of work at the intersection, excluding the final asphalt surface, will be completed by the end of June. At that time, the roadway will be one lane in each direction with turn lanes onto Wise Drive from both the northbound and southbound directions of Alice Drive.
Beginning in July, the majority of construction work will shift to the Alice Drive/Wesmark Boulevard intersection where additional drainage and grading work will be performed to tie-in Wesmark Boulevard and the northern end of Alice Drive into the recently constructed portion of Alice Drive. Work is expected to continue through September at the intersection with Wesmark Boulevard.
Upon completion of the work at the intersection with Wesmark Boulevard, placement of the final asphalt riding surface will be placed throughout the project and two lanes in each direction will be opened to traffic.
The SC-120 (Alice Drive) construction project consists of widening Alice Drive to 5 lanes with curb and gutter, sidewalk, and a bike lane from S-1074 (Wesmark Boulevard) to S-838 (Haile Street.). The prime contractor for the project is Palmetto Corporation of Conway.
