Public Comment Sought To Include Construction Funding in STIP for Traffic Management Centers

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is seeking comment from the public to amend the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to include $2 million in construction funding for Traffic Management Centers in Richland and York counties.

The Traffic Management Centers serve as the operations facilities for SCDOT's State Highway Emergency Program (SHEP)/Incident Responders. The centers monitor traffic flow and conditions, and provide for early detection and response to incidents on the interstate system.

The Richland County center has been allotted $100,000 for preliminary engineering and $900,000 in construction funds for FY 2017. The current traffic management center is housed in a repurposed building at the SCDOT Shop Road location in Columbia and is in need of major upgrade and repairs to meet existing and future needs.

The York County center has been allotted $1,007,000 for construction in FY 2015. The project involves construction of a new traffic management center at the I-77 Welcome Center, located near the North Carolina state line. The current center is housed in a repurposed trailer that has reached its service life.
