After reviewing many options, including the use of a temporary bridge, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will move forward with a plan to replace the Cypress Gardens Road Bridge with a permanent structure in an expedited manner utilizing emergency procurement procedures.
The cost estimate for a permanent replacement bridge is approximately $2 million and the project schedule is forecast to be less than 180 days to reopen the bridge to traffic.
Acting SCDOT Secretary Christy Hall thanked Governor Nikki Haley for her assistance. "The Emergency Declaration signed by Governor Haley on Tuesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the bridge collapse was a significant factor in expediting FHWA emergency funding for SCDOT. We greatly appreciate the Governor's help in this matter," said Hall.
Until the replacement project is complete, a detour is in place to re-route traffic.
Variable message boards are in place advising motorists of the road closure and the detour route. The net length of the detour is approximately 22 miles.
