The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to build a new bridge over Limestone Creek in Cherokee County, requiring the temporary closure of Baker Road (S-11-30) beginning on May 12.
The new bridge will be built on Baker Road approximately 4.2 miles southwest of the City of Gaffney. As part of SCDOT's routine Bridge Inspection Program, the bridge at this location was rated as structurally deficient and closed on Nov. 15, 2012.
SCDOT installed a temporary bridge to restore connectivity on May 23, 2013. Since that time, SCDOT has been working to replace the structure as soon as possible.
The South Carolina Legislature passed ACT 98 in 2013 which has allowed SCDOT to reallocate funds resulting in the acceleration to replace this structure. SCDOT anticipates beginning the installation of the new bridge this summer. The construction of the new bridge will require the closing Baker Road, beginning with the removal of the temporary bridge on May 12.
A detour will be marked using SC 150 (Pacolet Highway), Hamrick Street (S-11-388) and Old Georgia Highway (US 29). The net detour length is approximately 4 miles.
The current schedule calls for completing the work, removing the detour and reopening the road and bridge by Nov. 30, 2014. onHon
