2 of 4 Southbound Lanes to Close on Portion of I-77 in York County for Repairs

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) advises motorists of lane closures on Interstate 77 southbound in York County beginning 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, July 24, due to a hole in a bridge deck over the Catawba River.

Two of four southbound lanes will be closed from Exit 83 (Sutton Road) to Exit 82 (Cherry Road/SC 161 interchange). The two slow lanes (right side) will be closed; the two left lanes will remain open.

Due to heavy rush hour traffic expected this afternoon, motorists are advised to expect congestion and to consider alternate routes. SCDOT urges caution in all work zones.

The hole was found Wednesday during an SCDOT inspection of bridge decks from the NC line to Columbia. Repairs are expected to be completed by Monday morning.

The hole, located at mile marker 82.5, is less than 1 foot in diameter and is the result of aging infrastructure, not the recent rains.
