Public Comment Sought on Placement of Cable Guardrail Along Section of I-26 in Berkeley and Dorchester Counties

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is seeking public comment for a proposed amendment to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to include funding in the Federal Safety Program's "Corridor/Section Improvement Projects" category for the placement of cable guardrail along 30 miles of I-26 in Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

The project is estimated at $5 Million for FY 2013 and involves the installation of cable guardrail in selected areas in the median of I-26 from Milepost 169 to Milepost 199 (From I-95 to Summerville). The project also includes clearing and grubbing in the impacted median areas. Disturbed median sections will be replanted with native grasses.

The project was identified for improvements under the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) and has a collision history that indicates the location exhibits statistically higher than average crash rates and/or patterns. HSIP's purpose is to achieve significant reductions in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads through the implementation of infrastructure-related highway safety improvements.

A copy of this press release, the STIP Listing and a project location map also are available for public review and comment on the world web at:
