511 System Not Operating

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Friday, May 24, advises that its 511 Traveler Information System is currently not operating properly due to technical difficulties.

The agency's contractor in charge of the system is working to bring the system back online, however a timetable is not known at this point.

SCDOT will have other functions available to assist with traffic management during the holiday weekend:

  • SCDOT SHEP trucks will be patrolling interstates and major highways in several areas of the state to assist disabled vehicles, help with traffic control and incident management. SHEP (State Highway Emergency Program) serves motorists traveling in the Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, and Greenville/Spartanburg urban areas.

  • For SHEP assistance, motorists can dial *HP.
  • SCDOT has more than 350 traffic cameras in operation to assist in traffic management. To view SCDOT's traffic cameras, visit www.scdot.org and click on "Traffic Cameras."

  • Bridge load restrictions are available county by county at http://www.scdot.org/getting/bridgeload.aspx.
