Repairs begin Nov. 5 on US 701 Bridge at Great Pee Dee River over Yauhannah Lake

Nighttime Closures Mondays through Fridays require detour

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announces nighttime, weekday closures of the US 701 bridge at the Horry-Georgetown county line at the Great Pee Dee River over Yauhannah Lake beginning Nov. 5 due to repair work.

The bridge will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday evenings through Saturday mornings. The contractor may also close the bridge at times during Saturday and Sunday nights but these should be limited.

Electronic message boards along US 701 will inform motorists of upcoming closures.

During times the bridge is closed, motorists should plan ahead and adjust their travel times. Traffic will be detoured approximately 51 miles from the intersection of SC 51(Browns Ferry Road) and US 701(North Fraser Street) to the south near Georgetown and the intersection of US 701(North Fraser Street) and Lucas Bay Road to the north in Horry County.

A map of the detour is available at this location: http://www.scdot.org/getting/pdfs/US701_Detour.pdf

Built in 1953, the bridge requires improvements to two areas to stop its foundation from settling. SCDOT’s contractor, Cape Romain Contractors, will erect steel beams to hold the spans in place.

Repairs are expected to continue thru Dec. 31, 2012.

For more information, the public may contact Clifton Hough of Cape Romain Contractors at (843) 884-5167 or Jason Thompson of SCDOT at (843) 661-4710.
