Secretary of Transportation H.B. “Buck” Limehouse Jr. Issues Emergency Order for Repairs of Cosgrove Avenue Bridge in Charleston County

South Carolina Secretary of Transportation H.B. “Buck” Limehouse Jr. issued an emergency order Thursday, Nov. 15, to seek immediate repairs of a Charleston County bridge damaged by a tractor-trailer.

The order signed by Limehouse will allow engineers from the South Carolina Department of Transportation to seek immediate bids from contractors to repair the Cosgrove Avenue Bridge.

“My emergency order will expedite the normal state government bid process and allow our engineers to seek immediate bids to begin the repairs of this important artery in Charleston as soon as possible,” Limehouse said. “In the meantime, our bridge inspectors will continue to closely monitor this bridge. Safety of the public is our number one priority.”

During rush-hour on Wednesday, Nov. 14, a tractor-trailer traveling on Meeting Street struck the Cosgrove Avenue Bridge, severely damaging the bridge’s outside beam and one interior beam.

Traffic on Cosgrove Avenue, a four-lane road, has been restricted from using the outside lane in the direction toward the old naval base.

Bridge engineers say the full extent of the repairs has not been determined and that it is too early to tell how long it will take to repair the bridge.
