SCDOT Considers Replacing I-85 Twin Bridges Over Norfolk Southern Railway in Cherokee County with Single Bridge

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is seeking public comment for a proposed amendment to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) that involves revising plans for replacing the I-85 southbound lane bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway in Cherokee County to include replacement of the I-85 northbound lane bridge at the same location.

The I-85 twin bridges over the Norfolk Southern Railway were built in the 1950s and do not meet today’s standards.  Preliminary plans for replacement of the southbound lane bridge were developed in 2010-11 at an estimated cost of $6.8 million. The current plan likely requires additional right of way and does not include replacement of the northbound bridge.

Looking for cost effective measures, the SCDOT Commission is considering adding the northbound lane bridge replacement to the current plan for construction of a single structure that would carry both the north and southbound lanes over Norfolk Southern Railway for an additional estimated cost of $4.0 million.  The revised plan would save the state $2.8 million and sets up future I-85 widening to the median. It will also shorten the structures and will not alter the I-85 alignment.  At its February meeting, the Commission voted to seek public comment on the additional $4.0 million needed for the proposed revised project.

SCDOT’s objective is to replace the aging bridges with a new structure that meets today’s standards improving overall safety for users and residents.
